San Diego Comic Con 2013 introduced us to numerous comics, films, and television shows, but to be honest, I think the best has been The Sidekick from writer/actor Rob Benedict (“Felicity” and “Waiting”).
The Sidekick is the story of a past-his-prime superhero sidekick, Max McCabe (Benedict) that gets fired by his boss, Captain Wonder (Ron Livingston of Office Space and Swingers). Max needs to re-evaluate his life and figure out where he goes from here.
The story is a great mix of comedy with a 90’s style indie breakup film. Max gets dumped by Captain Wonder, hits rock bottom, and humorously goes on a series of “dates” trying to match up with a new superhero boss.
The half-hour short perfectly captures the feelings that go along with a real world break up and recovery and blends it with the perfect amount of humor to keep the mood from being dreary, but not so much that it drowns out the emotion.
On top of that, the cast selection is fantastic. It features many fan favorites, such as Livingston, Jordan Peele (Comedy Central’s Key & Peele), Martin Starr (Freaks & Geeks, Knocked Up), Lizzy Caplan (Mean Girls, Cloverfield), and Jason Ritter (Happy Endings, Parenthood) and is directed by Michael Weithorn (The King of Queens).

The series is being shopped as either a cable or web series. So do yourself a favor and keep your eyes peeled. In the meantime, check out the trailer below:
